Icarus Falling
Icarus Falling

This painting uses the techniques I learned when creating a commissioned copy of JMW Turner's famous painting "The Fighting 'Temeraire' tugged to her Last Berth to be broken up."
I saw this scene while I was walking the dog along the River Deben in Suffolk. I stood gawping for some time, awe-struck. The only thing I could think of was Icarus falling. He was the boy from Greek myth who flew with wings made from feathers stuck together with wax. When he got too near to the sun the wax melted and he fell to earth. In my painting he falls through the column of sunlight, not into the Mediterranean but into an English river. I didn't paint Icarus because I didn't actually see him.
